Since it was established in 1885, the Vander Veer Botanical Park has grown into a 33-acre park that encompasses a bounty of gardens, a conservatory, several fountains, a sculpture garden and numerous picnic areas. One of its main features is the Rose Garden, which boasts roughly 145 varieties roses shown in thousands of blooms. Schuetzenpark is German for shooting park, which was what this area was establihed to be in 1870. As a meeting place for wealthy German-Americans, Schuetzen Park contained an inn, a dance hall, a music pavilion, a zoo, several bowling alleys, a roller coaster, restaurants and much more. All that remains of this era is a street car building from 1911. People can enjoy walking on the trails, picnicking, looking at artifacts and animal watching.
